Graduate Application
Please note that the process for application is slightly different for each program. The MA in Art History requires different documentation from that of the MFA and must include current GRE scores which the MFA does not require.
Filing Dates
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all materials have been submitted by the required deadline.
Fall Admission Deadlines
MFA - January 15
MA - January 15
Spring Admission Deadlines
MA - October 1
Applicants will be notified by April 15 whether or not they have been accepted to the MFA or MA programs. All students who are admitted must notify the School of Art in writing of their willingness to accept by May 15. Failure to notify the School of Art of their intention to attend may result in the withdrawal of the graduate studies offer. (Applicants for MA spring admissions will be notified by December 15.)
General Requirements
Applicants to both the MA and MFA degrees are required to have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA in the last sixty hours of letter graded course work at an accredited institution and have a concentration in an appropriately related discipline. If the last sixty hours cannot be identified from the applicant’s transcript, the entire transcript will be evaluated for admission. On very rare occasions, students with less than a 3.0 GPA may be admitted on probationary status if other credentials are exceptional. Under no circumstances will an applicant with less than 2.75GPA (in the last 60 hours) be considered.
Admissions Process for the MA in Art History Program
In addition to the 3.0 GPA requirement, the student should ideally have a strong background in liberal arts with at least 18 hours of undergraduate art history credit. Students with fewer hours in art history must demonstrate special proficiency to do graduate work and may be required to take remedial courses. Each candidate will be required to submit evidence of both ability and motivation to do the kind of high level, often independent work required in a demanding graduate program.
Admission into the MA in Art (Art History) Program is a two step process. First the student must apply to the Graduate College for admission to OU.
This procedure requires the following:
- University of Oklahoma application form;
- Application fee;
- Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work.
The Graduate College will forward the applicant’s application referral to the School of Art for review.
The following should be simultaneously submitted directly to the School of Art:
- Master of Art (Art History) Application;
- letter of intent, one and one-half to two pages long;
- the most recent GRE Record examination scores;
- a written research paper produced as an undergraduate that demonstrates written and verbal proficiency as well as research skills;
- three letters of recommendation.
Admissions Process for the MFA Program
In addition to the 3.0 GPA requirement, a person seeking admission to the MFA Program must complete all of the application requirements and must demonstrate a high caliber of conceptual and technical skills necessary to undertake the rigors of the graduate program.
The admission process into the graduate MFA program is two step process. First the student must apply to the University of Oklahoma for admission to OU.
