The VRC started as a slide library for the art history professors in the School of Art in the 1930s. The VRC has holding of over 200,000 35mm slides, along with several hundred VHS and DVDs, ranging from prehistoric to contemporary, in architecture, sculpture, painting, and other media, from all areas of the world.

VRC has large image collections of medieval manuscripts, Native American and Mesoamerican art and artifacts, 20-century sculpture, Western American photography, 18th and 19th century American paintings and general survey slides.

In 2004 the staff started digitizing the slide collection and at this time we have over 8000 Native American slides digitized and data based and 1000 medieval manuscripts.

In conjunction with OU libraries, University of Oklahoma art students and faculty also have access to ARTstore, and Picture of Record.
