NORMAN--- Hollywood actress BEVERLY GARLAND comes to the University of Oklahoma to participate in events in her honor including the Independent Film Maker Series with the screening of the 1962 film, Stark Fear. The film directed by Professor Emeritus Ned Hockman will be screened on Friday, October 24, 7:30 p.m., at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, Kerr Auditorium. Ms. Garland, Prof. Hockman, and members of the cast and crew will participate in a question and answer session following the screening. The event is free and open to the public. With 40 feature films, more than 700 television programs and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to her credit, Beverly Garland has proven herself to be one of the industry's most prolific actresses. Born in Santa Cruz, California, Beverly made both her television and feature film debuts in 1950. Her television career was launched with an appearance in an episode of "The Lone Ranger." Her film debut was as a feisty secretary in the critically acclaimed "D.O.A.," starring Edmund O'Brien. Beverly made television history when she become TV's first policewoman in 1957 starring in the acclaimed series "Decoy." Since then, she has worked with many of the biggest names in the business and played a wide variety of memorable roles. Her favorites include playing Bing Crosby's wife in his mid-1960 television series "The Bing Crosby Show;" playing Fred MacMurray's wife and mother to his three sons in "My Three Sons;" the role of Kate Jackson's mother in "Scarecrow and Mrs. King;" and as Teri Hatcher's mother in "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." Beverly has also been seen in productions with Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin, Frank Sinatra, David Niven and many others. Her appearance on "Friends" matched her with Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston. Currently, Beverly is playing recurring roles on the daytime drama "Port Charles" and on the WB series "Seventh Heaven." Beverly earned an Emmy Award nomination in 1954 for her performance in an episode of the series "Medic." She gained notice quickly from her early work in film and television, which opened the doors to many diverse roles. Having recently celebrated the completion of her first 50 years in show business, Beverly has enjoyed a busy, challenging and rewarding career as an actress ... and a businesswoman. Beverly's off-screen life is filled with a variety of commitments, but none more important than overseeing the operation of the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn, in North Hollywood, California. The resort and conference center, located on seven lush acres just blocks from Universal Studios, was built by Beverly and her late husband, Fillmore Crank, in 1972. Beverly takes her responsibilities at the hotel quite seriously. She has served on the boards of both the California Tourism Corporation and the Greater Los Angeles Visitors & Convention Bureau. To Beverly, Los Angeles is the greatest tourist destination in the world. She is often seen welcoming guests to the hotel and sharing stories about her career and the history of the property. Beverly works side-by-side with her son, James, in the management and operation of their corporation's ownership of the hotel. The Beverly Garland Holiday Inn has become a regular destination for returning visitors to southern California and a welcome surprise to new guests discovering the property for the first time. For Beverly, herself, the hotel remains an exciting and active passion. Beverly lives in a home in the Hollywood Hills, where, including James, she and Fillmore raised four children: a daughter, Carrington, and Cathleen and Fillmore, Jr., from Fillmore's previous marriage. As Beverly begins her second 50 years in show business, she has set her sights on new roles to play as an actress, in addition to her ongoing roles as parent, businesswoman and entrepreneur.
