Karen Hayes-Thumann received her BS in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, her MFA from Indiana University a well as post graduate studies at Yale’s Brissago Program in Switzerland. She has studied and worked with many significant designers
and educators such as Wolfgang Weingart, Armin Hofmann, Paul Rand, Josef Muller-Brockmann and Rob Roy Kelly. In 1991, she joined the faculty in the School of Art faculty in the Visual Communication Program.
Karen has taught at the University of Cincinnati, Arizona State University and Carnegie-Mellon before coming to Oklahoma. Her work has been acknowledged in Print Magazine, by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as well as by others. She has lectured widely and has been a visiting faculty at Notre Dame University and the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla in Puebla, Mexico.
Over the years she has remained active in many design organizations serving on the Graphic Design Education Association advisory board, and local AIGA board and panels. She is currently serving with the AIGA Cross-Culture Diversity board and working to help develop their new educational initiatives in “Across States Across Culture”. She is the faculty advisor to the Graphic Design Association, a student chapter of AIGA .
Karen continues to work for a variety of clients in Oklahoma. In addition to her design work, she is also a photographer who has travelled to Europe, Tonga, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. Her photographic work has been exhibited throughout the state, the region and the US.
This fall Karen will be attending the 2007 Icograda World Design Congress in Havana, Cuba.
